Global Warming Is Impacting Wolves & Moose In The Great Lakes

According to John Vucetich, a population biologists in Michigan Tech's School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science, humans have made summers increasingly hot. "Hot summers are hard on moose. Hot weather causes moose to rest more and forage less, and summer foraging is how moose prepare to survive the long, bitter winters." This is another reason why we all should be concened with global warming. Read more...

Texas Governor Sees Hurricane "Dean" As A Major Threat

"City officials in Brownsville called for voluntary evacuations while in Edinburg, another city near the Mexico border, the Texas Youth Commission began evacuating nearly 270 inmates and staff members from its Evins facility. They were being transferred to another facility 400 miles north in Brownwood, according to Gov. Rick Perry's office.

In the coastal city of Galveston, residents remember the disastrous evacuation before Hurricane Rita in 2005. Lee and Courtwright said many who tried to evacuate then plan to stay in Galveston this time, no matter how vicious Dean becomes."

Tips To Decrease Your Carbon Imprints On The Earth

Is There A Link Between Hurricanes and Global Warming?

With Tropical Storm Dean or Hurricane Dean depending on the material I have read, I was reading these articles that discusses hurricanes and global warming.

'According to the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4), it is “more likely than not” (better than even odds) that there is a human contribution to the observed trend of hurricane intensification since the 1970s. In the future, “it is likely [better than 2 to 1 odds] that future tropical cyclones (typhoons and hurricanes) will become more intense, with larger peak wind speeds and more heavy precipitation associated with ongoing increases of tropical [sea surface temperatures].”" |Read more|

Model Home a Showcase for Green-Minded Builders

"While people experiencing health problems such as asthma and allergies would benefit from this type of home, they are not the only ones. Buyers with safety, energy and sustainability concerns could benefit as well.

"Green is not just about recycled, old used products. It's about clean air, less money on fuel . . . It's a whole paradigm shift."

Once the model home is finished, it will have an information resource center and will be open to the public for 18 months after its grand opening in September, said Jane Brooks, adding that the couple may host art exhibits at the location."

The State of New Jersey Enacts Greenhouse Standards

"The Global Warming Response Act seeks to dramatically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases coming from New Jersey in order to stave off the negative effects of global warming. By 2020, emissions should be reduced to pre-1990 levels, and by 2050 they should be cut by 80 percent of 2006 levels.

Exactly how this will be done, whether through an emissions voucher program, a cap and trade system, a carbon tax, or some other option, has been left open-ended in the legislation, with the specifics to be figured out by various state agencies within the next few years. Supporters praised this lack of specific prescriptions, seeing it as a way to maintain flexibility in order to confront a multi-faceted problem."

TIMELINE OF THE CASE AGAINST CORRUPT POLITICIAN "WANNABE" STAN "PAMPY" BARRE

Stan "Pampy" Barre' Pleads Guilty To Corruption

"Two men pleaded guilty Sunday to charges that resulted from a federal investigation of city government corruption during former Mayor Marc Morial's administration.

Former city property management director Kerry DeCay and restaurant owner Stan "Pampy" Barre, a Morial confidant, entered their pleas before U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to single counts of conspiracy, mail fraud and obstruction of justice." |Read more|

Morial Ally Pleads Guilty to Felonies

"In a dramatic last-minute development, one of the three members of former Mayor Marc Morial's inner circle who were scheduled to stand trial in federal court Tuesday pleaded guilty Friday to two felony counts involving mail fraud, delivering a potentially devastating blow to the prospects of the remaining defendants in a case that alleges extensive corruption at City Hall.

Following several hours of closed-door negotiations Friday with top officials in U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office, New Orleans construction company owner Reginald Walker entered his guilty plea about 6 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier.

Walker, 59, who has maintained his innocence throughout the case, also agreed to testify against the primary remaining defendants: restaurateur and Morial confidant Stan "Pampy" Barré and former city property management director Kerry DeCay."

Pressure's On As Morial Cronies Near Trial

"The most frequently asked question on the street these days is whether the feds will ever indict ex-mayor and now-Urban League President Marc Morial.

Speculation on the issue has been rife since the FBI used a battering ram to gain entry to his brother Jacques' digs early one morning more than two years ago. Meanwhile a string of indictments and guilty pleas has opened up the seamy underbelly of the Morial administration.

Next month Morial's former property management director, Kerry DeCay, and three others go on trial for their roles in one of the more spectacular scams allegedly pulled off under hizzoner's nose. If anyone has the goods on Morial, the pressure to rat him out must by now be severe." |Read more|

Letter Reveals Private Deals

"A long-whispered-about document describing a slew of undisclosed interests in public contracts held by members of former Mayor Marc Morial's inner circle surfaced in court records Monday courtesy of federal prosecutors, eight days before some in the group are scheduled to stand trial in a case alleging extensive corruption at City Hall.

Among other arrangements, the counter letter filed with the court, which describes a partnership between lawyer Roy Rodney and restaurateur Stan "Pampy" Barré, indicates that their firm, S & J Consulting LLC, stood to earn about $1.4 million over 12 years as a subcontractor for a city recycling program, and was in line for a one-third share in a joint venture to run the recently reopened Old Gentilly Landfill." |Read more|

Morial Friend Agrees to Deal in Tax Probe

"New Orleans political consultant William Schultz, a member of former Mayor Marc Morial's inner circle, was charged Tuesday with failing to file federal tax returns for two years during which he made money from companies run by other Morial associates.

Schultz, 57, has agreed to plead guilty to the charges and has paid nearly $187,000 in back taxes as part of a deal with federal prosecutors that requires him to help the government with other investigations, according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

Schultz, for whom the deal proposes a one-year prison term, is accused of not reporting his 2001 and 2002 income to the Internal Revenue Service, including consulting fees he was paid by restaurateur Stan Barre's firm, Pampy's Inc., and Moss Creek Development, a construction company owned by Reginald Walker." |Read more|

City Hall Graft Trial Delayed

"The long-anticipated corruption trial of four men charged with looting a massive energy-efficiency contract signed by former Mayor Marc Morial, has been delayed from September to January because one of the principal defendants says he is suffering complications from a recent kidney transplant, court records show.

Attorneys for Kerry DeCay, who served as Morial's director of property management, asked for the deferral in federal court in mid-July, saying that DeCay is having trouble concentrating because of various medications he is taking after the operation, and is thus not fit to stand trial.

DeCay received a kidney transplant from his wife on Feb. 14, court records indicate. The trial was originally set for Sept. 5, but has been rescheduled for Jan. 16 by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier.

The case revolves around the alleged siphoning of more than $1 million from a contract Morial signed with Johnson Controls Inc. of Milwaukee valued at up to $81 million. It was the largest contract let by the Morial administration, and the court case has the highest profile of any yielded thus far by a multiyear federal probe of contracting practices during Morial's eight years in office.

Defendants in the case, along with DeCay, include restaurateur and Morial confidant Stan "Pampy" Barre and businessmen Reginald Walker and Julius Lips Jr. Given the close ties between Morial and some of the defendants, the case is expected to shed new light on the ways that business and politics often intersect in New Orleans.

Another six people charged in the case have pleaded guilty to felony charges. They include Terry Songy, who was a project manager for Johnson Controls, and five subcontractors to the company. All six are cooperating with prosecutors." |Read more|

Former Mayor Morial Let Down by Allies' Guilty Pleas

"New Orleans lawyer Pat Fanning, who represents Morial, said that during a phone conversation this week with his client, the ex-mayor relayed feelings of sympathy for his three former associates, but added that he is "disappointed" by their courtroom admissions.

"He is sad for his friends, and particularly their families, because there is a distinct possibility they will go to jail," Fanning said. "At the same time, if they did what the government said they did -- and he has no knowledge of the facts of this case other then what he has read in the media -- he is very disappointed that they would have done those things."

For the record, businessman and Morial confidant Stan "Pampy" Barre; Kerry DeCay, the city's former property management director; and construction company owner Reginald Walker have pleaded guilty to multiple felonies in connection with a scheme to loot a massive energy-management contract awarded by Morial in the waning months of his eight years in office. As part of their respective pleas, all three men have agreed to cooperate with prosecutors." |Read more|

Six More Charged In Orleans City Hall Probe

"Court hearings were scheduled Wednesday for four men indicted as part of the investigation into corruption at City Hall under former Mayor Marc Morial's administration.

A city contract with a Milwaukee-based company, Johnson Controls, remains at the center of the investigation, which resulted earlier this year in grand jury indictments against four people with ties to Morial or his administration — restaurateur and Morial friend Stan "Pampy" Barre; Kerry De Cay, the director of property management under Morial; and subcontractors Reginald Walker and Julius Lips Jr.." |Read more

Feds Imply More Graft by Morial Associates

"None of the evidence is described in the original 24-page indictment.

Prosecutors will allege that Walker, who had City Hall subcontracts through waste hauler Browning-Ferris Industries to pick up office recycling and handle customer complaints, "kicked back" some of the money from one of those deals to Barre, according to the defense motions.

Prosecutors also will claim that DeCay "forced" SMG, a company that manages the Superdome and the New Orleans Cultural Center, to "take on Barre's friend and tax preparer" Nile Vincent as part of its contract with the city. DeCay oversaw the cultural center as part of his City Hall job." |Read more|

Morial Associates Turn Over Documents To Grand Jury - News Story - WDSU New Orleans

He said prosecutors are seeking a wide range of records from Barre about numerous companies he has been involved with. Haydel's subpoena is narrower." |Read more|

He Finally Pleaded Guilty

Stan Pampy Barre could only lie for so long until he was forced to tell the truth:

A yearslong federal probe into a conspiracy by key associates of former Mayor Marc Morial to skim more than $1 million from city contracts took a sudden and stunning turn Sunday with guilty pleas from the two most important remaining defendants.

With the case set for trial on Tuesday, political operative Stan "Pampy" Barré, a restaurateur, and Kerry DeCay, the city's former director of property management, entered an all-but-vacant federal courthouse Sunday morning to admit lead roles in a scheme to loot a massive energy-management contract awarded by Morial in the twilight of his eight years in office.

The collapse of Barré's and DeCay's defense, two days before trial, followed the defection late Friday of fellow defendant Reginald Walker, a construction company owner. Earlier, eight other defendants had pleaded guilty and agreed to testify for the government, among them Terry Songy, an employee of Johnson Controls Inc., the Milwaukee-based company that Morial hired under the terms of a 20-year, $81 million contract to help the city save money on energy bills.

The Value of Greenlogging to Our Environment

"Environmentalists and leading Democrats are advancing a new way to "green up" the state's portfolio by setting aside $70 million of state money to buy forestland for logging.

That may seem odd, but global warming has been redefining the rules of nature -- and politics, too. Environmentalists and their political allies say in the long run, logging is better for the planet than unchecked development."

State money is being set aside, in Washington State, to buy forestland for logging.

Reducing The Greenhouse Effect

"EPA and India's largest oil producer last week signed an agreement to work together to reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd. (ONGC), headquartered in Dehradun, has joined seven other large oil and natural gas companies as a partner in EPA's Natural Gas STAR International Program. This program, implemented in support of the Methane to Markets Partnership, aims to identify and implement projects in the oil and natural gas sector that cost-effectively reduce methane emissions and deliver more gas to markets around the world." |Read more|

The Simplicities of Global Warming

"One way or another, our assaults against global warming are likely to be symbolic, ineffective or both. But if we succeed in cutting emissions substantially, savings would probably be offset by gains in China and elsewhere. The McKinsey Global Institute projects that from 2003 to 2020, the number of vehicles in China will rise from 26 million to 120 million, average residential floor space will increase 50 percent and energy demand will grow 4.4 percent annually. Even with "best practices" energy efficiency, demand would still grow 2.8 percent a year, McKinsey estimates."

New Orleans Councilman, Oliver Thomas Convicted Of Bribery

Councilman Thomas accepted bribe from corrupt businessman, Stan "Pampy" Barre'

"According to documents filed in federal court, Oliver Thomas in 2002
met with Stanford Barre, who enlisted Thomas to assist him in maintaining a
parking contract Barre had with the French Market Corporation (FMC), City
of New Orleans. Barre was concerned that the newly elected mayor would
replace his company and thereby contract with another company. Barre
believed that based upon Thomas's position on the New Orleans City Council
and the FMC Board, he could delay, at least temporarily, the termination of
Barre's parking contract." |Read more|

Councilman Oliver Thomas Pleads Guilty To Accepting Bribes

Today, Councilman Oliver Thomas pleaded guilty to taking bribes from Stan "Pampy" Barre. During his tearful admission, he apologized to the City of New Orleans for his actions. Boo Hew Hew! Oliver Thomas. It is too bad you are not familiar with the old saying: "He who lay down with dogs, get up with fleas".

You chose to lay down with that number one dog Stan "Pampy" Barre. To you former Mayor Marc Morial; are you on pins and needles right now? Bad boy, bad boy, what are you going to do if the feds come after you? You know that "yellow belly" Stan "Pampy"
Barre is spilling his guts with the hope that he does not spend too many of his golden years in Federal Prison. After all, who is left to make his "Swamp Tasting Gumbo"? Since he is such a lowlife thief, I wouldn't be surprise if one of his main ingredients, in his gumbo, was alligator piss he stole out of the bayou.

Councilman Oliver Thomas - Another Corrupt Individual

Later on today, we will learn more about the charges that Councilman Oliver Thomas is facing. He always held himself out to be such an ethical man. I guess we can't believe what he says since his actions have given us a gigantic leap into his character.

Thank You, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten

U.S. Attorney, Jim Letten, is doing a splendid job of weeding out corruption in the City of New Orleans. I would like to thank him for doing such a wonderful job. It speaks well of his character. I wish him all of the best and I hope he is able to bring all of the corrupt individuals to justice. Thank you, Jim Letten.

Stan "Pampy" Barre Failed To Consider What His Actions Would Cost The Citizens Of New Orleans

Its too bad that Stan "Pampy" Barre did not consider the effects of global warming, on the City of New Orleans, before he looted Johnson Controls' Energy Savings Contract.

Perhaps he should stick to what he knows best: making potato salad and creole gumbo. Maybe Mr. Barre will be able to put his culinary skills to good use in federal prison. Some of his critics, however, do not find his food that great. Oh well, perhaps he can take a cooking class or two in the federal pen.
